Here in the Philippines, the attack occured not on Sunday Dec 7 but on Monday December 8th...which was the feast of the Immaculate Conception (of the Virgin Mary)...a big feast day and fiesta day, so again many people were in church.
My husband was a child, and when the Japanese first occupied our small town, my husband tells of a Japanese soldier who was friendly and gave him candy and was well liked...later, however, things changed, and he tells of an execution in front of his home, and up to a few years ago, used to point out a nearby rural house that was "haunted" because it was the Japanese headquarters and people were tortured to death there...
Later, when still a young teen, he joined the local guerillas....when asked what he did, he merely said he "practiced marching and carrying a gun"....and denies anything else...but whatever, it was enough to get him killed if he had been caught, and it was also enough to get him a free education...
People don' t realize that the schools were mainly shut down during the Japanese occupation, so my husband had to go back to high school after the war, and eventually college and medical school...
He always said his first choice was to be a pilot, but he didnt have a high enough math grade to get into pilot school, and medicine was his second choice...
