Headlines below the fold

Korean hostages in Afghanistan...the Korean left is using it to bash the US, but there are rumors that the Koreans might help the Afghans hold a rescue attempt...no matter what happens, the left there (who are enamoured of the North) will blame it on the US...

Attention Taliban: Stick with Italians. They pay money under the table....

The dirty little secret about "persistent vegetative state" is that it is grossly overdiagnosed...not only have several patients woken up after receiving drugs that can affect the brain (Amatidine, Ambien) but now a device that stimulates the thalamus woke up a guy who was "comatose" for years.

Thinking has to do with the cortex (outer layer) of the brain; consciousness has to do with the thalmus and reticular matter in the deep brain.

I was stranded during the 1993 snow storm, but the "Big burn" is what gives me nightmares...I lived in New Mexico when that state was a mass of fires...our town was threatened but Los Alamos up north got all the headlines...
