Justinian's Plague

One reason that the Roman Empire disintigrated was the plauge of Justinian, thought to be the Bubonic plague...like later plagues, it stuck around for awhile, and probably killed a third of the population of Europe.

But diseases change, and they are planning to do DNA studies on the victims to identify the plague.

The plague that caused the fall of Athens during the time of Pericles turned out to be Typhoid...the rash mentioned made some people wonder (typhoid today has only a pink rash, making some wonder if it was hemorrhagic measles or atypical smallpox).

More HERE.
I never treated a case, but up on the Navajo reservation, the docs have to keep an eye out for it...there are a couple cases a year...it's endemic in ground squirrels and prarie dogs.
