Last harvest it was so wet we lost part of the crop because we had to get it dried at the rice mill. Actually, we were lucky: There was rain and storms last harvest season, and a lot of folks either lost their almost ripe rice or lost part of the harvest because they couldn't dry it properly, or they had trouble paying for it to be dried.
We're starting the "hunger season" (the time before the next harvest) and I worry because a lot of local folks lost part of their crop.
Sigh.
(the usual way to "dry" rice is to lay it on a tarp or concrete in the sun to dry. On most rural roads, you have to go slowly so as not to drive over drying rice...photosource).
Right now, it's midseason for "dry season" crop (which usually has to be supplemented by irrigation water). But the rains in the past two weeks have devestated some areas north or south of here.
We put the rice drier on our high field, up on a ridge, near the chicken farm that we used to run but now rent out.
We have a house there, and a well water pump, and electric lines, but we store rice in bedrooms of the house, so we don't sleep overnight anymore.
this is a photo of the rice harvest from last year, piled up waiting to go to storage.
