and with modern techniques, this means protein for a growing population, since chickens produce both eggs and cheap meat...and manure for organic fertilizer.
we used to run a chicken farm, but it is now rented out so we can concentrate on organic rice.
For some reason, I can't find any photo of our chicken farm, but I did find this one as an example of the world wide trend toward "factory farms" to feed the urban population.
