Nearsighted kids (and Chickens)

BBC reports that nearsightedness is epidemic in Asian schoolkids, and they posit it is from not getting out in the sunlight.

Which reminds me of this Chicken goggle story...

The eyes accomadate to what they see...So could the problem be too much "close work", with the eye adjusting to reading all the time, not to distant objects, rather than light?
