The Persiod meteor showers are due in mid August.

I did have the time and leisure (and clear sky) to watch this as a teenager....although the most impressive shooting star that I ever saw was a huge fireball that we saw when I worked in Africa...very impressive, but burnt itself out before it hit the ground.
An alternative name for the phenomenum is the Night of San Lorenzo, and the Italian name for this classic film is indeed the night of San Lorenzo: alas I can't find it on line...
San Lorenzo is the patron saint of our barangay (neighborhood) and he is also the saint of bakers since he was killed in the times of Ancient Rome by baking him on a grill. (A typical Catholic joke).
He is popular with the poor, because he was a deacon, meaning a church official who worked with the poor and distributed alms...the legend goes that he was asked by the officials where he had hidden the church's treasures, he took them to the slums and showed them the poor there. The officials, who of course could legally confiscate his money, were not amused, to say the least.
