Video download of the day

Video download of the day: Matewan.

Also by independent film maker Sayles.

for those of you unfamiliar with the culture (or who only hear the disdainful cliches about it) this History channel has some background, although it too is full of cliches.

A better explanation is Senator Webb's book, Born Fighting.

Another film that looks at the culture where kinship ties are important can be found in the crime drama, Next of Kin, which alas is not on line. A lot of mountain folks migrated to the cities for work...and a lot of ethnic Americans came to work in the mines.

Which is why many coalminers nowadays look more like Charles Bronson, whose family still lived in Ehrenfield when I worked in the area in the 1980's...

Bronson played Joseph Yablonski in an HBO film about his murder and the reform of the UMW....the Deerhunter, with it's scenes of the Russian Orthodox wedding, was also about people from the coal mine area of Pennsylvania.
