There was an ABS-CBN miniseries with the same story here a couple years ago: May Bukas Pa, complete with local themes such as the mayor wants to bankrupt the monastery so he can build a casino there...
The boy talks to Jesus, as did the boy in the original movie, and calls him "Bro".
(Cultural note: The corruption and big money behind casinos and the numbers games is a big issue here: the old Lefty Archbishop Cruz blasts the administration for it's lax opposition to the problem, even though two recent "massacres" were gambling related).
