Right now, I am reading a book on Chinese proverbs, A thousand pieces of gold, by Adeline Yen Ma (not to be confused with the movie), which is one of the books I brought with me. Lots of stuff about how proverbs mirror episodes in ancient Chinese history.
I used to have her autobiography, but apparently left it behind or lent it to someone. But I did find a fan reading of the book on Youtube, at least until the copyright cops find it.
here is one of the episodes.
and here is the author.
A sad story of how neglect and family favoritism can affect a person. Sigh.
But I should add: My oldest (adopted Colombian) son read it, and his comment was: Why is she complaining all the time: She always had enough to eat.
He grew up in rural Colombia, but his birth parents loved him (I adopted him after they died). But it does put things into perspective.
And no, I am not criticizing the author, a doctor: I complain about stuff all the time too... as doctors, we are perfectionists and expect perfection, so complaints are the flip side of being good at details. And because we have been hurt, we can emphasize with our patients.
update: Some of her books are available (if registered) at Scribd and at Internet archives.
