“One of our pilots filed the following report on the event – ‘I observed Initially 2 large square orange lights. One on top of each but slightly off set however there was a gap in height between them.
“‘The top object was constantly orange. The lower one occasionally flicked white but majority of time was orange. In addition to that on 2 occasions I observed 5 orange lights but that was momentary.
“‘I initially observed them when leaving Birmingham control zone. I thought they were just south of Gloucester and definitely a lot higher then us. We then climbed 5000 ft and they seemed level at that height and stationary.
excuse my scepticism:
when I lived in Mescalero, our Apache knew if they saw a strange object flying over, it was probably from the White Sands testing ground (apparently the folks in Roswell were less skeptical, hence the urban legends that thrive there).
And indeed, a lot of the UFO reports may have been of the SR 71 spy plane, and the "triangular" flying objects might have been protypes of the B2 Stealth Bomber:

but flying boxes?
Well, there have been quite a few reports of drones being flown near airports, causing the airport to shut down: either out of ignorance or as terroristic practice (similar to the laser pointing at the pilots coming in for a landing).
this article includes this drone photo...hmm... looks like it's lights would show as a square, and in the dark one the glow of a bright light might perceive them as a solid object.
