corruption: It's a small small world

This article from the PhilInquirer (from the WaPost) relates breathlessly that Trumpie boy actually telephoned and talked to Duterte.... and praised him.

so why should a president who is trying to stop the Philippines from descending to a narcostate and transit center for drugs be praised? And when the US is trying to encourage the Philippines to stop Chinese aggression in the West Philippine sea, shouldn't a telephone start with a little flattery (did anyone bother to read "the Art of the Deal"?)

ah but the actual headline is a "leak" by "Horrified" WH staff, planted in the WaPost in order to blacken Trumpieboy.

Here's the actual headline:

Trump phone call to Duterte among many that ‘horrified’ White House staff, says US paper

Citing anonymous White House sources, Washington Post said the call to Duterte was just one of many that Trump made to world leaders who are either outright authoritarian or display authoritarian tendencies and which were so outrageous and bordered on sellout. These leaders included China President Xi Jin Ping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
oh the horrors.

And now tell me why is "leaking" such telephone calls in the interest of the US?

because the MSM (and the CIA) has decided Duterte is evil.

Just ignore that one side effect of the drug war is that our streets are safer... from StrategyPage:

The anti-drug operation that has been going on since mid-2016 has reduced the crime rate and shattered many of the local networks that distributed drugs. Information gathered from the thousands of dealers and low-level distributors arrested has provided more and more evidence of corrupt government, police and military officials involved. This often involved protecting local drug dealers or getting those arrested out of jail. Another major form of corruption was made possible by senior police officials who were able to get large quantities of seized drugs sold back to distributors. Senior police officials could certify the stolen drugs as “destroyed.” This scam is believed to have implicated the retiring national police commander. All these drug and corruption arrests have made the anti-drug war popular with the majority of Filipinos.

and just ignore that the latest headlines report Chinese criminal hackers based in the Manila area have been arrested because they no longer could bribe officials to look the other way.

The press is supposed to report the news, but when you find the press is kept from reporting it (either because of strict libel laws and threat of violence, as here in the Philippines or because the press is politically biased, as in the USA), you have a problem finding out what is true.

So who do you believe?

Dilbert has a couple of podcasts about how this is propaganda to manipulate you.

Turley, in the Hill, notes that the (softball/edited) interview with Joe Biden's son misses the point:

“Say it nicer.” No words better sum up the news coverage of Hunter Biden. That instruction given from him to ABC News reporter Amy Robach came after she noted that he was “in and out of rehab” several times for dependency on drugs ranging from cocaine to crack.
In fact, the media has been “saying it nicer” for weeks, telling readers and viewers there is “no finding of wrongdoing” by the son of Joe Biden while avoiding any substantive discussion of his controversial business dealings...
For three decades, I have written about the practice of giving lucrative jobs and contracts to the spouses and children of powerful politicians as a way of gaining influence in Washington.
Hunter Biden’s deals are textbook examples of how political families become rich from public service.
yes. Anyone who lives or works in the corrupt countries of the Third world knows how this works.

But the fact that it is being done by politicians of both parties in the USA has not been a big deal: so where are all the reporters finding the dirt on how these politicians got rich?

indeed, like the "casting couch" at NBC, (or McCarrick's casting couch using local seminarians for that matter) it is an open secret that no one dares to point out, because... because why? Because they are friends? because these folks are nice folks and we don't want to destroy their careers? or maybe because we are involved in similar matters and could be next?

in sort of related news: from the BBC:

The brothers behind the Rebaxy HIV drug scandal were arrested for fraud involving a financial company.

why did this catch my eye?

Because a couple of years ago, that drug company was fined for fraud in selling substandard drugs. BBC LINK.

this is the company that provided substandard HIV drugs to Africa via the Clinton foundation.

fortune magazine article about the Ranbaxy scandal of falsifying quality control reports, in order to produce substandard drug.

Clinton himself bragged about all that money saved by substituting the generics for brand name drugs, but only right wing sites seem to connect the dots. LINK

in contrast, here is a report from Vox lauding the work of the Clintons and later the Clinton foundation in treating HIV in Africa,  LINK2

it should be noted that a 2007 WHO report said only 1.8percent of the HIV drugs tested were "substandard" and it was denied that they caused any harm... but later studies did find more problems.

but in Australia, some were questioning the reason that government paid so much money to the Clinton Foundation and wonders if quid pro quo seemed to be going on : LINK

and what is the link between the Australian politician who was deeply involved in the Clinton HIV initiative who just happened to talk to a minor Trump worker in a bar, resulting in an excuse to manufacture the Russia kerfuffle?

who knows. I'm a physician, not an investigative reporter.

But when the Russia kerfuffle, the Indian Pharmacy company brothers and the Clinton Foundation all seem to be linked to one another, it seems that there is a small world out there of VIPs who all know each other and work to help each other.
