Chinese pursuit of those who dare disagree

This is from a Japanese news site: an interview with Hong Kong activist Agnes Chow who is now studying in Toronto Canada:

,,,,UK Gurdian article discusses her activism:

In 2020 she was jailed for seven months on convictions related to the 2019 protests that swept Hong Kong, and then arrested again in 2020 on accusations of “colluding with foreign forces” under the controversial national security law, introduced to crack down on the movement. Released on bail in 2021, she had to turn in her passport and report regularly to police.

She describes her reeducation forced on her when she applied for a visa to study overseas in this article.

she is now studying in Canada, but still fears for her safety.

“I’m concerned about my personal safety here in Toronto,” she says. “Canada is a democratic country which respects human rights and freedom, but I read some news reports about Chinese overseas police, secret police in different countries, including Canada.”

UKGuardian article from last year about the Chinese police stations in Canada and around the world.

so what are they about?

Canada’s federal police force is investigating reports that clandestine Chinese “police stations” are operating in Toronto amid reports of a global network used to target overseas dissidents.

China insists these are not their police, merely locals who offer help to Chinese living overseas.

but as a 2022 UKGuardian articl points out:

But recently unsealed court documents in New York corroborate accusations that China has engaged in a foreign interference campaign, harassing and surveilling Chinese nationals abroad.

A 2020 article in the UKGuardian  reported this is called operation Fox Hunt: on paper it is to pursue corrupt Chinese who fled that country but in reality it is being used to intimidate Chinese living overseas and to pressure dissents.

Often they are told to return to China or their families will be punished.

update: China stopped any pro democracy candidates on the ballot and guess what? The pro China candidates won.
