Humor for the day

These are from a book called Disorder in the American Courts, and are
things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now
published by court reporters that had the torment of staying calm while these
exchanges were actually taking place.

______________________________
ATTORNEY: Are you sexually active?
WITNESS: No, I just lie there.
______________________________ ______________
ATTORNEY: This myasthenia gravis, does it affect your memory at all?
WITNESS: Yes.
ATTORNEY: And in what ways does it affect your memory?
WITNESS: I forget.
ATTORNEY: You forget? Can you give us an example of something you
forgot?
______________________________ ______________
ATTORNEY: Now doctor, "isn't it true that when a person dies in his
sleep, he doesn't know about it until the next morning?"
WITNESS: Did you actually pass the bar exam?
______________________________ ______
ATTORNEY: The youngest son, the twenty-year-old, how old is he?
WITNESS: He's twenty, much like your IQ.
______________________________ _____________
ATTORNEY: So the date of conception (of the baby) was August 8th?
WITNESS: Yes.
ATTORNEY: And what were you doing at that time?
WITNESS: Getting laid
______________________________ ______________
ATTORNEY: She had three children, right?
WITNESS: Yes.
ATTORNEY: How many were boys?
WITNESS: None.
ATTORNEY: Were there any girls?
WITNESS: Your Honor, I think I need a different attorney.
Can I get a new attorney?
______________________________ ______________
ATTORNEY: How was your first marriage terminated?
WITNESS: By death.
ATTORNEY: And by whose death was it terminated?
WITNESS: Take a guess.
______________________________ ______________
ATTORNEY: Can you describe the individual?
WITNESS: He was about 20, medium height, and had a beard.
ATTORNEY: Was this a male or a female?
WITNESS: Unless the Circus was in town I'm going with male.
______________________________ _______
ATTORNEY: Doctor, how many of your autopsies have you performed on dead
people?
WITNESS: All of them. The live ones put up too much of a fight.
______________________________ ___________
ATTORNEY: ALL your responses MUST be oral, OK?
What school did you go to?
WITNESS: Oral.
______________________________ ___________
ATTORNEY: Do you recall the time that you examined the body?
WITNESS: The autopsy started around 8:30 p.m.
ATTORNEY: And, Mr. Denton was dead at the time?
WITNESS: If not, he was by the time I finished.
______________________________ ______________
ATTORNEY: Are you qualified to give a urine sample?
WITNESS: Are you qualified to ask that question?
______________________________ ________
And the best for last:

ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a
pulse?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you
began the autopsy?
WITNESS: No .
ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive,
nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and
practicing law.

Satire of the day

a "news story" at a satire page about animal rights activists:

Johnstown, PA (GlossyNews) – Local and state police scoured the hills outside rural Johnstown, Pennsylvania, after reports of three animal rights activists going missing after attempting to protest the wearing of leather at a large motorcycle gang rally this weekend. Two others, previously reported missing, were discovered by fast food workers “duct taped inside several fast food restaurant dumpsters,” according to police officials.

Of course, locals would know it's a satire: Johnstown is not known for it's motorcycle gangs. And they would not be met with a benign reaction such as duct tape if they tried these stunts...and the animal rights folks are busy going after the locals, who often supplement their diet with venison rather than go on food stamps.

On the other hand, one doubts they would bother to harass the ralley at Deadwood...

Sentimental art?

The Anchoress and Joe Carter over at FirstThings have their knickers in a knot discussing Thomas Kincaid.

JoeCarter is especially snide, not only dismissing Kincaid's art for it's sentimentality but saying:

What the artist fails to understand is that Vietnamese-Americans (as well as African-, Mexican-, Chinese-, and other hyphenated Americans) probably do not share the Anglo-American cottage fantasy. And his cottage scenes are precisely that: fantasies.

He's only partly right. Compare and contrast:
Thomas Kincaid:

Amorosolo's famous Philippine paintings:

No, personally I can't stand Kincaid (his paintings use cool colors and are cluttered).

Carter writes:

his cottage scenes are precisely that: fantasies. Adults hang paintings of Kinkade’s paintings of cottages in their living room for the same reason that little girls put posters of unicorns and rainbows on their bedroom walls. It is a pseudo-referential nostalgia, a longing for what does not exist in reality but exists in the fantasy realm of possibility.

Ah, true. But why do you feel that a painting, no matter how "sentimental" and idealistic, is wrong?

which brings us to Tolkien:

Tolkien maintains (that) critics of Fantasy are confusing “the Escape of the Prisoner with the Flight of the Deserter” .
Critics would imply, without explanation or justification, that any escape from the world around us is necessarily shameful, and Tolkien resists that thinking strenuously, even going so far as to compare that line of thinking to .. totalitarian state(s) that considers departure from or even criticism of it treachery.

Did Neanderthals think like us?
ScientificAmerican article, if you have money to subscribe.

  • But over the past few decades archaeologists have discovered a handful of enigmatic artifacts hinting that our cousins the Neandertals -- long dismissed as intellectually inferior -- might have engaged in symbolic activities, too. Experts dismissed the finds, however, attributing them to modern humans instead.
  • The recent discovery of Neandertal jewelry and body paint from two sites in Spain provides unequivocal evidence of Neandertal symbolism and suggests that modern human behavior has ancient roots.

not much public celebration here.

In contrast, everyone in the US celebrates July 4th...

Maybe it's because there are so many different "independence" days to celebrate,
or maybe it's because here in the Provinces "independence" only meant getting rid of outsiders who supervised the rich elites to run the country to letting the rich families run the country without interference...

One sign of this resentment was that although Erap lost to NoyNoy, Erap's VP won. The local farmers groups are pro Erap but figured Noy noy would be a better president. I suspect if Noy Noy hadn't run, Erap would now be president again (despite his poor health).

Presumably NoyNoy might be able to clean up the place, although with Gloria in the congress, she'll probably try to slow real reform down.

The bad news: They get hungry and wake me during the night to let their mom out to nurse and take them out some softened dogfood to fill their little stomachs.

The study also found that sad people were better at stating their case through written arguments, which Forgas said showed that a "mildly negative mood may actually promote a more concrete, accommodative and ultimately more successful communication style".

Darth Vader...borderline personality?

(AP Photo)"

teaching the public about mental illness by using comic book and movie characters? whatever.

But I agree with those in the article who say Vader was narcissitic personality disorder. Usually borderlines have a "love" relationship that quickly turns into hate, and usually people dislike them; they often are self abusive.

Narcissitic personalities, however, are common in politicians.

The really really important question of the day

The Middle East figures Obama is a patsy and is vieing for who can hate Israel the most (the reborn Ottoman Empire, or the reborn Persian Empire?).
At the same time, Obama's oil policy gets ripped in the Rolling Stone.

But certain bloggers know who the real enemy is. The real story is the question if Sarah Palin had implants.

Seems like the leftwing blogosphere never heard of minimizer bras that we "full figured" gals wear under our business suits.

Well, all you have to do is google to find out it's not true.

From the helpful Freepers, who are known for their love of good looking conservative women, come these photos: Sarah in Iraq three years ago:

After:

Yup. Look the same to me, but what do I know?

Presumably this is a sexist way to trash a very dynamic lady, whose criticism of the naive way a certain community organizer trusts a certain oil company who gave him lots of campaign funds.

However, our lovely President Gloria is known to have had bosom enhancement surgery, and it hasn't stopped her from efficiently running the country (and hiding how she got rich doing so).

So why worry about a half term ex governor who has five kids also has a real bosom or not?

It might be this rumor:

The Netanyahu government’s attitude to the United States shows it is “waiting for President [Sarah] Palin, an Obama official reportedly told Peter Beinart, writing for the Atlantic Monthly news site. Palin was the Republican candidate for vice president two years ago and is considered a front-running candidate for the next presidential election in 2012.

The real problem is if there is a war against Israel this summer, and if later Iran gets a nuke, you might indeed get a backlash that could put a female Harry Truman in the presidency.

But some of us hope Hillary will be that lady, but then never mind.

Stuff below the fold

First, Google Earth finds Saddam's WMD's, and now StrategyPage notes they are spotting the truth about North Korea:

... pro-North Korean groups are having a harder time attracting and keeping members, because so much more damning evidence of the truth is getting out of North Korea. Not just from refugees and Chinese who do business there, but from things like Google Earth, that clearly show the luxury housing of the tiny ruling class, and the poverty of everyone else (as well as the prison camps.)

I was going to link to studies "proving" eating hamburgers increases asthma risk and cord clamping late increases stem cells, but reading the details make me wonder if these studies are accurate.

For example, if you clamp the cord late, you can get a polycythemic infant who suffers from cold injury, or if you put the kid on mama's lap, you end up with an anaemic kid.

As for hamburger: No proof in poor countries, making me think hamburger is a marker for poverty, and living in inner city neighborhoods where there is more pollution and smoking in moms.

The extreme left is dropping their loud support for Obama.

The good news: This will help him in the long run, since many of these folks despise the average working class person and turn off a lot of moderates.

Leisure Suit Larry and other absurditys in the news

On BNN I posted a post about the staged "relief" ship escapade into Gaza, only to have one poster lament that the Evil Jews are stopping vital supplies from going into Gaza:

"...the Israellis steadfastly refuse to publish a list of allowed goods and appear to change their minds daily on what is allowed. Eg. Hair conditioner is banned at the moment..."

Oh my, no wonder the people in Gaza are rioting: They are having a bad hair day, and it's all Israel's fault.

But if I remember correctly, hair tonics contain alcohol and other inflammable ingredients, so I googled and found this on the Leisure Suit Larry game:

Get engaged. After cartoon, walk south, east to fire ring and get ashes. Walk south and get sand. Walk north, west, north, SAVE. Walk to middle edge at chasm. Throw vine. Stand near big crevice, near the steam. Put the airsick bag in the hair tonic. Light airsick bag with matches. Throw bottle in crevice. Kill doctor.

Of course, moonshine whiskey would do just as well, but good Muslims presumably won't touch evil alcohol.

on the other hand, maybe playing Leisure suit Larry while drinking beer would be a more benign than teaching your children to blow up Jews.

For those without teenaged boys at home: check wikipedia's article on LeisureSuitLarry.

The point is that the next time you are told your hair tonic can't be taken on an airplane, now you know why.

Gift item of the day

Tired of broken umbrellas littering your closet?

Well, just buy a Brelli, a biodegradable one.

Stylishly crafted out of sturdy bamboo (a renewable resource) with a printable bioplastic canopy, The Brelli will apparently completely biodegrade in 18 to 24 months (though we would hope that there would be no need to dispose of it!).

Read more: THE BRELLI: 100% Biodegradable Umbrella | Inhabitat - Green Design Will Save the World

and just think of the look of surprise on the face of the one who stole your umbrella when it degrades spontaneously on her.

InfromthecoldBlog links to an article on the Arlington Ladies.

who attend every funeral there, because sometimes family and friends are unable to attend.

...the stranger was an "Arlington lady" — one of a small band of volunteers, mainly spouses of retired military officers, who attend every funeral in Arlington National Cemetery. She would read the notes — a formal one from the Army Chief of Staff and his wife, and a personal handwritten one from the Arlington lady herself.

She would learn of their mission: to ensure no soldier is buried alone.

Johnson wasn't alone. In fact she felt as though an entire nation was grieving with her.

But she never forgot the kindness of her Arlington Lady...

Google earth finds Sadam's lost WMD?

I know StrategyPage "get things right" on places where I know about (e.g. Colombia, the Philippines) so I sort of trust them on this:

June 2, 2010: In the last few months, Lebanese terror group Hezbollah appears to have received over a hundred M600 ballistic missiles from Syria.

Now, after many people scoured Google Earth satellite photos of Syria and Lebanon, looking for the weapons, something particularly interesting was found in northern Syria, outside the town of Masyaf.

Google Earth users noted five compounds, that appear to be closed to all but authorized personnel. Inside these compounds there appeared to be entrances to bunkers dug into adjacent hills.

In 2003, Syrian sources reported that Iraqi chemical weapons were sent to Syria, and some were storied in bunkers near Masyaf.

    (WTF?)

So does that mean Iran is arranging Hezbollah and their "friends" in Turkey to fake the "aid ship" fiasco, to justify their using chemical weapons on Israel? And what does this have to do with Israel placing their nuclear subs in an area that can hit Iran?

And alas a lot of good people who will suffer..

    Recipe of the day

One of the "organic" vegetables at our training farm are red peppers.

And one use of them is in Kaldereta, Recipe HERE.

In our area, we usually make it with goat meat, ginger root, and both sweet and hot red peppers.

Peachy has a variation of the recipe, using beef and green peppers.

Headlines that make you go "WTF"

    Need money? Blame Google maps.

After all, they didn't include a warning that it's dumb to cross a busy snowcovered highway in January.

Latest NYTimes "victims": students who were too good to go to ordinary schools and now moan they can't pay back those huge bills for their private college tuition.

Especially those who get a degree in "women's studies", and want to live in expensive San Francisco...
Hint: get a nursing degree, and then pay it back working for a living.
    ------------------------------------------

Groups tell FCC there is a need to police "hate speech".

    Can you say "Astroturf", children?

    -----------------------------------------------------
"Peace activists" deliberately try to start a war...

    StrategyPage has the facts,

"...The donors of tons of supplies in the three cargo ships, could have landed the supplies at an Israeli port, and have them shipped legally into Gaza (where supplies arrive daily that way.) But the pro-Hamas activists want Israeli control over what goes in, or out, of Gaza, to be removed, so that terrorists can move weapons in and attackers out, at will.

Egypt and Israel refuse to go along with this, as both nations have been attacked by the many Islamic terror groups that have established themselves in Gaza.

Wealthy Arabs, Turkish politicians and European leftists (who put together this "rescue fleet" stunt) still glamorize Palestinian terror groups, even though these outfits kill more Arabs, and cause more misery to Arabs, than to Israelis. It's all about the message, not the reality."

    ------------------------------

StrategyPage says go and enjoy yourself at the World Cup.

Yes, SouthAfrica's murder rates are high, but they point out the murder rates in various countries are a lot worse, but SA keeps statistics.

You heard about the teaparty protesters?
Well Berkeley has a TeaCosy protest.

Rogue knitters encamped along the Berkeley-Oakland border with lawn chairs, tea cakes and knitting projects to protest the city of Berkeley's order that they remove an 8-foot knitted tea cozy they sewed over the T in a public sculpture they believe insults Oakland.
