The rules against cross racial adoption was started years ago by black social workers to stop "white" social workers from preferring an affluent family over a local family of the same ethnic group (including friends and relatives willing to adopt the child... informal adoption without legal papers by relatives or family friends is common in the black community. Also in the Hispanic, white, and AmerIndian community... but rarely noticed by outsiders. I know of many many cases among my relatives and patients)
in formal adoption, in the past, strict rules stopped adoption for children by parents who might be single, be gay, be too "old" or who might merely lack enough bedrooms or might need subsidies to pay for the counseling or specialized medical care for their child who is recovering from abuse or who has special needs.
With the huge increase in children needing to be placed, I believe the rules are now not so strict, but my point is that adoption is about finding a child a home, not about the parent's ego. And an imperfect home with love is better than no home.
Cross ethnic adoption makes one aware of racism in the USA, and we have to help our children who face it. We also have to help them find mentors in their own community so they understand their own culture and have role models so they can be proud of their culture.

I never saw this disease in Africa, but I remember reading about it when there was an outbreak in the USA back in 2003, due to imported animals from Ghana... actually these imported animals gave the MP to prairie dogs, and the people who bought prairie dogs for pets got infected, usually via cleaning the cages when you had a small wound for the virus to enter, or by being bitten by the Prairiedog.
in other words, you can get it not just from monkeys but from small rodents.
However that epidemic was not spread person to person.

presumably this is not going to cause a major outbreak, but it does show how diseases can move from animals to humans and spread quickly if not stopped.
Personally, I'm more worried about bird flu, (H5N1 avian influenza virus) which has killed a couple hundred people in Asia who were in close contact with chickens etc., but luckily has not taken the last step that makes it possible for human to human transmission.

Mail delivery here was very slow, and so was the various courier services. Part of the problem? Quarantine checkpoints, and decreased hours when offices were open.
This affected import and export trade, but since our rice deliveries are done by our own truck, it only stopped deliveries for a month then slowed it down because the usual three hour drive was increased by a three hour wait at the checkpoint. (food deliveries are a priority here).
Manila is still partly shut, but things are improving.

at 12 minutes, they talk about the volunteer fire fighters in the USA.
when I lived in rural PA, the fire department was down the street. It was a volunteer company, with a very VERY loud siren. When it went off, you got out of the street so that those speeding there would not have to slow down so they could get there in time.
They even had a large "cherry picker" that would reach to the 4th floor, which made me wonder where they would use it (the highest building in town was 3 stories). But then a neighbor's house was on fire, and it spread up the wall from the kitchen to the attic: The cherry picker extended the firemen over to the second floor to squirt the water directly on the fire (the house had a garden that made it hard to get closer on the ground with a truck, and entering the house to go up to the attic would have been dangerous).
Because every small town had a small company, often a larger fire called in for help from all over. So six companies came to fight the fire when the mini-mall in the next town caught fire (near the huge nursing home complex where I worked).
We had to evacuate the patients, many of whom were bed ridden, from the building closest to the mall, and close the windows to protect them.
The minimall included sports stores (with bullets and black powder for hunters that made it dangerous... luckily they kept the fire from that end of the minimall, but it mean that the offices in the other end of the minimall were all destroyed)... this was an "electrical fire" (not arson, just ignore that the minimall owner had just testified against a crooked judge the week before).
the volunteers did a lot of practice: and yes, some got injured, usually minor, but one of my friends got a minor back fracture when he fell off a roof. No, he wasn't fighting a fire, but they were using the ladders and shovels and picks to remove snowpacks from roofs to prevent the roofs on the old poorly built houses in the area from collapsing.
The fires in California are scary: I lived in New Mexico the year that Los Alamos burnt, and there were half a dozen other fires, including one in our area.
The local Apache had a hotshot team that would fly out to help fight forest fires, and would literally stay in the area for weeks on end. Often they would see us to fill up their medicine supply: usually just normal over the counter medicine. And some of them were women...LINK

Phase 3 tests of thousands is almost done on half a dozen western vaccines, and it looks good. One person might have had a side effect, which is hyped all over the press, but the good antibody and T cell immunity found from the vaccine is barely discussed.
My son is sceptical about the US vaccine because he is convinced Trump is releasing it early for political reasons... but then he tells me that the Russian vaccine works.
So much for science... fully tested western vaccine (tens of thousands in the phase3 testing) is presented as bad, while the untested (well, actually tested on 67 people in phase two testing) Russian vaccine is ok?
One wonders how much of the anti vax movement which is pushed on the internet is pushed by some with a larger agenda.
After all, misdirecting rage and distrust against the vaccine because Trump will benefit China and Russia... by making the public health (recommended by the CDC experts, not Trump, who merely followed their advise) response the problem, not the Chinese policies of coverup that left the virus lose on the world...and of course now both Russia and China have untested vaccines to give out to poor countries (see we are your friends)...Russia is even offering to send cookbook instructions to Brazil and the Philippines so we can make our own version of their vaccine.
This has big geopolitical implications.
One wonders how many of the videos out there pushing conspiracy theories are influenced by Russia (or China).
Others, of course, are pushed by people whose websites offer snake oil cures and over priced survivalist gear for you to buy.
Joe Biden's coronavirus adviser Dr. Vivek Murthy says the candidate has "already started" work on his plan for expanding testing, building contact tracing capacity and distributing a vaccine.
Translation: The plan is to criticize the vaccine via their minions in the MSM so people distrust any of the six different vaccines, but voila, once Biden is elected, he will wave a magic wand and everything will be done and you will be saved (translation: instantly the plans developed by professional scientists and experts in the logistics of mass vaccine projects under the Trump administration will be implemented but Biden will take credit for it.)
Thousands will die because of this politically inspired delay, or because the antivax propaganda will scare people by hyping the possibility of a rare side effect, but never mind: Once Biden is elected everyone will trust the government again...
It's politics. Remember this when the headlines shout if someone dies of something probably unrelated but the death could be spun as vaccine related. (Remember how the fish tank cleaner chloroquin overdose death was hyped? One expert at Yale said this could have saved tens of thousands if it had been used properly.... Same here).

I am not sure why we need to step in diinfectant...this was done at airports a couple years ago when there was an epidemic of foot and mouth disease in cattle here in Asia. But covid spreads via air, but maybe because it settles down in dust and there is a lot of dust on the streets.
In the meanwhile, we caught two mice in my room. So this morning, when the dogs were barking like mad, I thought they were trying to catch a mouse... but no, it was a frog. When I tried to rescue the frog, it scurried through a hole in the wall, presumably where he got in earlier.
Since my cat Petunia had kittens on my bed, she is outside or staying in the cat' s room, the spare bedroom we use to store junk. The dogs kill kittens, usually when they lrave the nest to wander around, so she only has one of her three kittens left alive. Sigh. I now feed her on the windowsill...she eats there with her almost grown kitten, along with at least one visitor cat. I know it is a visitor because our senior tomcat, Pepper, gets into fights with him at night, to keep him away from Petunia and Mamacat, both of whom will be going into heat now that their latest batch of kittens have left the nest.
In the latest covid news out of Wuhan, they found quite a few cats tested positive...it is thought the cats caught it from their owners, not vice versa.
And in other covid news, there were 260 (?) Cases and one death out of the 450,000 who attended the Sturgis rally. Lots of hatred on twitter against them, for not wearing masks...
However, no reports of spread among the "mostly peaceful" rioters who presumably didn't spread it because they wear masks and of course the fires they set presumably prevent the virus from spreading.
the Covid hysteria is overblown (it is a bad disease, worse than influenza but not as bad as the Spanish flu, and not nearly as bad as other epidemics that spread in the past and could spread and kill again).
But modern westerners who think they control all aspects of their lives are aghast: it's almost like people are saying: How dare a disease hurt/kill me. It must be someone's fault. Let's blame Trumpieboy/Fauci/BillGates/the WHO/China/etc. (although that last one, China, is indeed partly to blame).
Which is alas why we are now seeing people developing paranoia against things that actually are saving lives: isolation, masks, and even rejecting without a logical reason a possible vaccine. (Kamela Harris insists she won't take the vaccine, implying it is being released early before all the tests are done, implying that Trump will release the vaccine early to get votes).
silly me. A quick google (or a phone call to the CDC) would have let her know that the phase three testing for the Pfizer vaccine will be over by mid October, meaning it can then be released by the end of October or early November...not because of the election but because that's how things are done.
But for us here in the Philippines, waiting for perfection in the phase three trials means we won't get the well tested vaccine from US companies for awhile, so we will be more likely to buy the Russian or Chinese vaccines, that haven't even started phase three testing:
why risk a partially tested vaccine? Because the Covid epidemic has shut down our economy and overwhelmed our hospitals, and hey, if a few people die of the vaccine, it's better than thousands dying of Covid, or shutdown related malnutrition because people are out of work and can't afford good food. And don't forget all the diseases that are not treated because no one will go to the hospital, either because they are afraid of catching covid, or they lack money to go to the doctor.

and yes, the association of disease with the Irish, along with the fear of losing "American culture" by outsiders with a different value system , religious bigotry (fueled by traditional British anti Catholic bigotry, and also by Catholic opposition to protestant Bible reading in schools), crime and gangs, and the worry about illegal voting. All of these issues fueled the nativist movement of those days, which led to the "anti Irish Riots" in several cities,link2 albeit not in NYCity.

Cities with deteriorating sanitation, gangs roaming the streets, distrust of "dirty" immigrants: The same issues are being discussed exaggerated by politicians in this year's US elections.
Sigh.
But there is another side to the story that few notice:
the real heroes: Medical personnel, truckers, grocery store workers, the police, the farmers, and the lowly folk who keep the streets clean.
K dramas are the thing: Many are even showing on NetFlix, which Ruby has a subscription, but usually I screen them via a local streaming service. There are several, some with aps for a small fee or free but with ads.
I discovered the show while checking out the Kpop discussion boards... most of the discussion is about the melodramas and romances, but they also have the ratings of which are more popular, and one of the highest rated shows was one called "Once again", which hasn't yet hit Netflix,
(the NetFlix show "Once Again" is a completely different show).
But this one, made in 2020, is a G rated family drama, so you should, so keep an eye out for it because it is a very nice show, not in a bland cliche ridden Hallmark channel way, but similar to the nicer classic tv shows we used to see in the past, where family members had different personalities but loved and supported each other.
And we are now approaching the 100th episode (in two more weeks) and I can say: It's a very very good show.
Song Young Dal and Jang Ok Boon have been married for many years and they have 4 children: Joon Sun, Ga Hee, Na Hee and Da Hee. Third child Na Hee is a doctor and she works with her husband Doctor Kyu Jin at the same hospital. They fell in love during their medical school days and got married, but their marriage life is not doing very well. Meanwhile, the first child Joon Sun and the second child Ga Hee are both divorcees and live with their parents. The youngest child Da Hee struggles as an intern at a company.
and then things change: The doctors date others, but figure out they still love each other, the mother in law from hell befriends the youngest sister, who works at her cafe and later falls in love with her other son. And then there are lots of subplots of finding a lost sister, the stunt team moving upstairs and are joined by a young man who was essentially homeless because he is fleeing his family after a terrible accident, etc.
and yes the PC police came after them because a minor subplot is when the Kimbap shop is opened by a lady who got tired of running a kareoke bar and fighting off drunks, and brought two of the bar girls with her...and I guess the PC thought these ladies were "sexualized" but they seem to have missed the point: It is about rescuing these girls from the tawdry environment of working in bars... they quit and came to help the older lady at her restaurant because she had protected them and they did not want to be mere sex objects (hint: They tone down their costumes after being corrected by the other shopkeepers).

As a doc in isolated rural hospitals, we knew about weather...sometimes we could not helicopter out patients and had to send them 30 miles to the local airport to be evacuated via a fixed wing airplane. We lost a baby and a car accident victim due to the delays.
But the dirty little secret is that helicopters sometimes crash, but so do fixed wing small planes.
I lost a patient in a small fixed wing aircrwaft because the local airfield was a soybean field with emergency lights.
We had a rainstorm and although the pilot did drain the water from the tank, apparantly not all the water was drained...after stopping to refuel, he stalled and crashed.
So ground ambulance is safer, but sometimes you might lose the patient due to the delay.

Discussing the various vaccines being developed for covid: The US and EU and UK vaccines seem to be working well in the phase three trials. so might be released in October for the US and in Europe. The Russian and Chinese vaccine will be used without phase three vaccines (translation: They will use them without full screening if they work or have side effects because it is urgent to get something to use, and because the phase II studies look good). No recent news if the Philippines will be able to get a vaccine to use, except older news articles suggest the Philippines will be used for the phase III of the Russian vaccine (but since the Philippines was harmed by the Dengue vaccine problems, it is a problem since the government officials and politicians might stop it's use) Remember: Both Brazil and India have pharmacutial companies who are able to produce vaccines if given the instructions. When you read "ain't it awful" stuff about the vaccines, I agree with the good doctor: None of the anti vaxers have seen the diseases that are prevented by vaccines. I have seen some of them both in the USA (I predate measles vaccine) and in Africa. So their paranoia will kill people: but probably not the anti vaxers here, because usually healthy people who aren't too old don't get die with Covid, except for health care workers... the reason? How sick you get depends on the dosage you are in contact with. Two of our relatives in the UK who work in respiratory therapy (nurse anesthetists) got it, one a mild case and one was very sick but recovered. But that explains why the death rate of health care workers is so high.
a lot of the lecture is technical: about different approaches to the vaccine, the description gets a bit technical.
One problem is the US vaccine might need two injections to get an adequate antibody level. Antibodies help, but the real test is if the vaccines enable the T cell lymphocytes to work for cellular immunity. Second: maybe countries won't try to coverup outbreaks: e.g. so the one month delay by China to notify the world won't happen again, and there will be less negative feedback when folks shut down border (as look at the racism attacks when Trumpieboy shut down flights from China, although that fact is constantly denied i.e. gas-lighted by the MSM). And three: the basic science in developing this vaccine will enable other vaccines to be produced for a new disease more quickly.

yes, there are good religious films. But too many of these religious films suffer from the problem that the makers approach the subject with such reverance that they make everyone in the film a plaster saint: it's almost as if they think a flat affect (flat unemotional exprerssion) and raising eyes to heaven mean you are holy. Attention: It isn't. I've worked with missionaries who risked their lives treating people, and I've seen people who bear suffering and trials that would put ordinary folks into a hissy fit. Holy/saintly people are not plaster saint or "church lady" types: they are folk who pray hard and work hard, and would fit right in the family gathering or having a beer after work and relaxing. True saints are, (how can I put this?) wholesome and warm. Think Mother Abigail in the original "The Stand", and you get the idea. well anyway: On the Catholic websites, there has been some buzz about the newest "Catholic" film Fatima, and alas, this film also suffers from the "visionaries as schizophrenics with flat affects" as "holy" problem. To put it bluntly, none of the people act as real people, and you just don't care about what happens to any of them. and it also suffers from the problem of a bad script: that if you didn't know the story, you will get lost in the details about what is going on. this is unfortunate, because this story literally changed history: it stressed prayer for the conversion of Russia, and inspired many to pray for the conversion of Russia (when I was a child, the housewives in our neighborhood met once a week to pray the rosary for peace). and one of the people who believed that prayer, not bombs, would cause communism to fall was a Polish factory worker who later became Pope. And indeed, he was one of the three people behind the peaceful fall of the Berlin wall.. Story HERE. or for the full story, get the book: In summary, just another B film touted with a "religious theme" being pushed at believers. there are good religious films, and it says a lot that "non believers" tend to make better films. The best film about Fatima is a "Fictionalized" version of the story, but you know, sometimes fiction is closer to the truth. and in this case, it's actually a good film, even for non believers to watch (i.e. good acting, humor, a well written plot). alas, the the film is no longer on Youtube but can be watched here on Gloria TV.

Don't ask me...I live in the Philippines, where the elites and CIA manipulate the social media to bash Duterte, but ordinary folks know we are safer and support him. it's sort of a big tent opposition: The CIA wants him removed because he is was sympathetic to China, the elites want him removed because he is against corruption, and the "yutes" join in on the social media because the universities and Catholic schools are taught by socialist/liberation theology types. and Catholics want him removed because to them getting rid of drug dealers is a civil rights violation (whereas a politician who sends a hit squad to kill his rival that kills a bunch of bystanders including our nephew can die in bed and get a Catholic funeral, complete with KofC bodyguard).
