More classic audiobooks on line

Librivox is slowly increasing the number of classics on their site...so if you are interested in ancient books but your eyes can't take the strain of reading (or if you are like me you get bored reading, but can listen to them on your mp3 player while jogging or crocheting) then check them out.

Today's offering: Xenophon's Anabasis.
his
Imagine this. You are a young writer who joined a mercenary army just out of curiosity, but after the mercs helped win the battle, their employer was killed, leaving all of you hundreds of miles from any friendly faces.

When your officers go to negotiate a surrender, they are killed and you are told: surrender or die, which in those days wasn't a really good choice since surrender usually meant a life of slavery working yourself to death in silver mines or quarries.

So what did the Greeks do?

They said "Up yours", voted new officers, and sent the bad guys the message: if you want our swords you can pry them from our cold dead hands...and then they started marching home.

One of these days, someone will make a great movie of it, or update the screenplay.

Calling Bruce Willis....calling Bruce Willis.

Local news

Yesterday was "Independence day" which meant the government offices were closed, but no a lot of celebrations..

Puno warns of increased frustration by the populace under the present government...this in itself would not be new but it was on the front page of the Manila Bulletin, which usualy has a flattering photo of the president on the front page.

On the other hand, Puno is one of the most popular names for the elections next year.

Give'm Hell Harry also had snotty guys insulting his daughter:

It seems to me that you are a frustrated old man who wishes he could have been successful. When you write such poppy-cock as was in the back section of the paper you work for it shows conclusively that you're off the beam and at least four of your ulcers are at work.

Some day I hope to meet you. When that happens you'll need a new nose, a lot of beefsteak for black eyes, and perhaps a supporter below!

Pegler, a gutter snipe, is a gentleman alongside you. I hope you'll accept that statement as a worse insult than a reflection on your ancestry.

Demonstrations, Demonstrations take two

Anti ChaCha rallies in Makati ...one report estimated 18,000, which is medium sized for a Manila demonstration. (CHArtrCHAnge)

Erap and Cory send greeting but couldn't attend.

What is going on is that the President's allies in the the lower house of Congress are trying to change the constitution so she can stay in power...
ABS-CBN, which tends to dislike the President but tries to be impartial, describes it this way:

MANILA - President Arroyo will not intervene and ask her allies in the House of Representatives to stop pushing for Charter change (Cha-cha), which has once again sparked suspicions that she is planning to stay in power beyond 2010.

"It has been a policy of our President not to interfere with Congress on Charter change," Secretary Gabriel Claudio, Mrs. Arroyo's adviser on political affairs, told radio dzMM on Tuesday.

and then there is this:

Demonstrations, Demonstrations

CNN International sent their favorite reporter Amanpour to cover the Iranian elections, so I guess it is now a story for the western press.

The coverage is good, but their photos tend to be blurry and full of stock photos of Iranian demonstrations as angry young men shouting slogans,

but in contrast, TehranPhotoBlog has photos of good looking babes at rallies, like this one:

What does this mean? It means that they feel safe enough to take their kids to the opposition rallies.

Insomnia downloads of the day

Teresa of Avila's classic book on spirituality The Interior Castle is now for download on Librivox.

And a book that I am listening to now has the second part for download...Life of Charlotte Bronte...
If you wonder where the nasty brother character came from, you'll find it here...

Since I'm studying ancient Roman history, I was aware that Suetonias was the National Enquirer of the early Roman empire, but I wasn't aware that Tacitus was the equivalent of the HuffPost...boy, did he hate Augustus Caesar.

Well, the new book is his "Agricola" with a theme that sounds like today's multiculturalism:
"...As in the Germania, Tacitus favorably contrasts the liberty of the native Britons to the corruption and tyranny of the Empire; the book also contains eloquent and vicious polemics against the rapacity and greed of Rome...."

Ah yes, after all, what did the Romans ever do right?

Gift Item of the day

No to Con Ass

big demonstration expected in Makati today against change to a constitutional assembly that is supported by president Arroyo...

the big question is if it will only be the "usual suspects" or if it will escalate into something big.

The reason behind the Con Ass and Cha(rter) Cha(nge) is that if the constitution is changed, then Gloria, who is no longer eligible to remain president, would be able to be appointed as Prime minister and continue to run the country.

Oh well, up here it's rice planting season, so no one is eager to go...

Crazy English

English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
> English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted.

> But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
>
> And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and Get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?
>
> If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?
In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

> Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.
