Lessons for today
a very good talk on development...the comments stop when she mentions coca cola, but I've seen coke or fanta in the most remote cities and villages of Africa, Asia, and South America...and what is more important is that there are bottling plants in medium sized towns in these countries.

so here I am downloading a NatGeo special from youtube (yes, we get NGeo Asia, but a lot of the best programs are on later at night, when we are sleeping)...and then when I try to download part three, I get the "sorry but they won't let you watch it in your country because of copyright something or other".
No problem, I just download it from a Chinese site that mimics youtube.
They reason I learned about all these places to download videos in the first place was because Amazon refused to let me download a movie I had bought from them, due to copyright laws. The movie was an oldie which I couldn't find here in the boondocks of the Philippines, but torrent sites had it listed, so no problem.
And, ironically, if I want to watch a new movie, we can find these films at the Palenke for less than a dollar, often before it opens in Manila.
What's wrong with this picture?
And when I hear about books and textbooks costing almost as much for the ebook version as the hard cover, I also shudder. Yes, medical textbooks are available on line for overseas docs, but someone needs to look into other types of textbooks. No, I rarely use ebooks myself...too old fashioned... since the US stopped their cheap book postage rate, I get most of my books used...most best sellers appear at our "used book kiosk" three years after they are published, and I have found quite a few classics there too.
In contrast, ten years ago, we couldn't get any books here in town, but we have had cable TV since the early 1990's.

supertyphoon should hit Monday...but might be far enough north of here to spare us the worst.
Rice harvest is due, and we are investigating buying a rice drier, to help us dry the rice in case of bad weather (the usual "drier" is to place it on a tarp on a road and let the sun dry it).

I'm downloading "bible story" stuff for Rubie, who home schools (and Who hates reading the Bible but loves stories).
And I came across this video, about Florence Nightingale, which is not too preachy and does show how brave she was (not only in facing down disease, but in facing down those in charge).
In those days, the only one who would nurse sick people in hospitals were nuns (Anglican or Catholic or Lutheran Deaconesses) or drunks...what FN did was make nursing a profession by stressing professional training.

They found conditions appalling. Blankets were rotting in warehouses while the men did without, because no one had issued the proper forms for their distribution. The lavatories in the hospitals had no running water, and the latrines were tubs to be emptied by hand. But no one emptied them, since official regulations did not specify which department was responsible for doing so. The result was that the hospital had a foul stench that could be smelled for some distance outside its walls. Far more men were dying in hospitals of infection than of wounds.

Lesson for today
Remember, love is just for a time
But Happy Meals are forever.
this doesn't upset me as much as some "natural food" enthusiasts. I already knew that fast food has preservatives (I even break out in hives if I eat a large meal at these places).
But here in the Philippines, where food poisoning is common, I am happy to know I don't have to worry about diarrhea after eating a cheeseburger. Hives, yes. Diarrhea no. (unless it's undercooked and contaminated with ecoli).

What's wrong with this picture?
China is pressuring the gov't to punish our police and Mayor Lim for doing their best in a bad situation? England wants to prosecute a soldier who risked his life for a woman who knew her actions could result in being kidnapped?
Why punish the resucers who risked their lives, instead of countries like Italy who pay off terrorists, a policy that encourages more kidnappings and enables terrorist to kill more local folks? when the third Italian priest was kidnapped in the Philippines, local wags joked that the Abus must like pizza.
But of course, the dead killed because of ransom payments are locals and not important to the US or European press...

Catholics, or those who know about the connection of the vision at Fatima Portugal and John Paul II (and it's connection with the downfall of Communism) might want to check out this old movie on youtube.
In other words, without John Paul II and the idea that prayer and standing up to evil rather than violence to oppose communism resulted in the fall of those atheistic dictatorships without a civil war resulting.
Religious opposition also resulted in the freedom of India (Gandhi) and the Philippines (Cory and Archbishop Sin) and secular versions ignore a very real force in history.

ANOTHER propaganda piece telling you why they government shouldn't waste money on you. The WaPost found a Nurse Practitioner who says mammograms are not needed...guess they couldn't find an MD low enough to write such nonsense.
She is wrong, however: True, in young pre menopausal women, the cancer grows fast and metastasizes early, so Mammograms might not lower the cancer cure rate that much (the cancer would be too small for the mammogram to pick up, but then grow large enough to feel a couple months later).
But for older post menopausal women, the cancer grows slower, so this is not true.
