Hello Kitty: Bah Humbug

all the reviewers hated the film:
Reviewer Doug writes:
"...Our daughter has alot of "Hello Kitty" products, I will NEVER purchase another thing from this company again. It almost seems that the Japanese firm that produces Hello Kitty sadistically put this video tape out knowing that it could destroy the belief in Santa Claus to thousands of American children..."

Bird flu...tick tick tick

more cases of human to human bird flu transmission...this time in Pakistan...this is "Stage Three":the jump from bird/human to human human transmission...several other suspected "jumps" of the virus in Indonesia..and China.......next step: Pandemic...tick tick tick

Think you're safe? The Pakistani family's cousin visited them last month...he lives in NewYork.

And now they have found the Birdflu genes in Swine influenza
genome. Since pigs are mammals, most human influenza evolves because it jumps from pigs to humans...

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) researchers have identified a new strain of swine influenza -- H2N3 -- that belongs to the group of H2 influenza viruses that last infected humans during the 1957 pandemic. This new strain has a molecular twist: It is composed of avian and swine influenza genes.

Bird flu is also bad news for poutry farms in Asia...Poultry is about 1% of the economy, but farmers who have to cull their poultry can end up bankrupt...not to mention the anguish in being forced to kill one's favorite fighting cock....and in the UK, turkey culls to prevent spread have made the traditional Turkey dinner expensive..

Global warming: Fraud or bad math?

"Never ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity" as the saying goes.
So is Global warming a big conspiracy for an evil One World Order to take over the world, or is it just that scientists who can't tell a mean from an average find it easier to publish articles that agree with the latest fad?

Link 2
s the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change)... bases its analyses on peer-reviewed research, but it does no checking of that research itself. Yet most peer-reviewed research is not properly checked prior to its publication. ..

One example is at
Link3.
Nature published a study that used the ripening process of Pinot Noir grapes as an indicator for the warmth of the climate.....
The work aroused Keenan's suspicion, and he wanted to test its mathematical foundations. (when he finally got it, after many requests he discovered)... The authors had smoothed the data for their study, confused standard errors with standard deviations, used incorrect parameters, and confused daily temperatures with average temperatures....

...
the Nature editors hadn't noticed anything, since the data was never put at their disposal, and they never asked for it either. ... The mere fact that the grape harvest model gave a temperature for 2003 that was 2.4 degrees Celsius above the temperature actually measured by Météo France should have made the editors suspicious.
------------------

Stuff like this happens with medical journals, which is why we GP's rely on secondary reports (Family practice articles, summaries, lectures) rather than the hard stuff in the fancy journals...which often has similar problems not noted in the original publication....things like "increase rate of heart attack up 50%" might mean a tiny increase from 5 to 8 out of 100 000 population years...

Keeping people from sin

The mullahs closed some Internet Cafes to keep people from sin...

In San Francisco, they outlaw other sins....
After banning plastic bags from chain grocery stores and bottled water from City Hall, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom has set his sights on soda - working up a plan to charge a new city fee to big retailers of sugar drinks. "The bottom line is that there is a direct nexus between high-fructose corn syrup drinks like colas and Big Gulps and obesity among schoolkids," Newsom said Friday...

The irony is that if they had closed the bathhouses that encouraged promiscuous gay sex back in 1978 when the syphillis and Entameoba Histolytica epidemics were rampant, there'd be a lot less HIV...

As for the Mullahs: Their HIV is being spread by drugs, not sex...yet they are trying to eliminate simple flirtation.

Heaven take one

While walking down the street one day a US senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies.
His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

"Welcome to heaven," says St. Peter. "Before you settle in, it seems there
is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see,
so we're not sure what to do with you."

"No problem, just let me in," says the man.

"Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is
have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose
here to spend eternity."

"Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven," says the senator.

"I'm sorry, but we have our rules."

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down,
down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of
a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it
are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake
his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich
at the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and
champagne.

Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a
good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that
before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises...

The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St.
Peter is waiting for him.

"Now it's time to visit heaven."

So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of contented souls
moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a
good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter
returns.

"Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose
your eternity."

The senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: "Well, I would never
have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I
would be better off in hell."

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to
hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land
covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting
it in black bags as more trash falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. "I
don't
understand," stammers the senator. "Yesterday I was here and there was a
golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank
champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland
full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?"

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, "Yesterday we were
campaigning..... Today you voted."

Poem of the day

Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
Transforming the yard to a winter delight.
The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve.

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep.
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know , Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.

My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.
Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight.

A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child .

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts..
To the window that danced with a warm fire's light
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.
No one had to ask or beg or implore me,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me.

My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December,"
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers."
My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile.
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.

I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home.
I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.

I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life with my sister and brother..
Who stand at the front against any and all,
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least,
"Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast?

It seems all too little for all that you've done,
For being away from your wife and your son."
Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget.

To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled.

Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Phil president is visiting Spain...getting jobs for Pinoys there and lots of money for investment. The king congratulates her for removing the death penalty from the books, thereby stopping the execution of a Spanish Philipino for the rape and murder of two girls. Nope, wouldn't want to kill someone for such a minor crime.
The mutiny is over, things are quiet, and impeachment is off the table. And 30 congressmen went with GMA to visit Spain. No, it has nothing to do with the dropping of the latest impeachment probe...
Our congressman however stayed home, so maybe there is hope.

MPAA breaks copyright law

the MPAA is going after college students by providing colleges a program to spy on students that use the college network to download songs and movie by P2P.

Problem? They used an linux code, and violated the copyright agreement.....slashdot reports:

"Ubuntu developer Matthew Garrett has succeeded in getting the MPAA to remove their 'University Toolkit' after claims it violated the GNU GPL. After several unsuccessful attempts to contact the MPAA directly, Garrett eventually emailed the group's ISP and the violating software was taken down."
