History in the headlines

No, it's not a neolithic monument.
It's an Irish Mass Rock

In the 18th century the cruel Penal Laws were passed in Ireland. Priests and bishops were not allowed to say mass. The people gathered together in the open at mass rocks or in safe houses. Some fields in Ireland have the name "Carraig an Aifrinn" or Mass Rock....

"...The custom of placing a lighted candle on the window at Christmas is also said to come from Penal times. It was a signal to the wandering priest that it was a safe house to visit and that the family wanted to receive the sacraments. After the Penal Laws the custom continued but the candle was now used to show the Holy Family the road to Bethlehem and as a welcome to Baby Jesus into the home...."

family news

The coup is over.
Local TV news crews were arrested, and lots of protests by the media.

Curfew tonite from midnite to 5 am...
the problem is that Chano is setting up for a trade fair, and they usually drive back late; we are hoping they stay there with Joy's sister for the night.

Another day, another coup attempt

But this one seems serious.
Trillianes, who is under indictment for a previous coup attempt but won election as a senator a couple months ago, walked out of a hearing about that coup attempt and was joined by other soldiers, and asked the people to join him to ask the president to resign. Some soldiers then took over a hotel in Makati.

Archbishop Cruz, a firebrand who is always protesting civil rights violations by the government and it's corruption, is backing Trillianes. No reports about the rest of the church or other churches.

A couple days ago, the latest attempt to impeach President Arroyo was blocked by her supporters in the Congress.

summary of ABSCBN etc: The head of the Army denies any major military rebellion; in the meanwhile troops are being sent to the Manila area to reinforce those in Manila (Many Military had been sent to other areas to help with the typhoon related emergencies).
The North and South Luzon expressways, the major highways, are having checkpoints set up and some roads in Makati (a business district) are now blocked by police.

ABS CBN website with updates is HERE.

Right now on TV the government spokesperople are talking about "rule of law"...and the opposition is saying sarcastically that the corruption and civil rights violations by the present government make the claim "rule of law" absurd.

subsidiary.

The partridge will be retained, but the pear tree never turned out to be the cash crop forecasted. It will be replaced by a plastic hanging plant, thus providing considerable savings in maintenance.

The two turtle doves represent a redundancy that is simply not cost-effective. In addition, their romance during working hours could not be condoned. Their positions are therefore eliminated.

The three French hens will remain intact though they will now cluck in English with only the hint of an accent, thus reaching a broader market share audience.

The four calling birds were replaced by an automated voice mail system, with a call-waiting option. An analysis is underway to determine who the birds have been calling, how often, and how long they talked.

The five golden rings have been put on hold by the Board of Directors. Maintaining a portfolio based on one commodity could have negative implications for institutional investors. Diversification into other precious metals as well as a mix of T-Bills and high technology stocks seems to be in order.

The six geese-a-laying constitute a luxury which can no longer be afforded. It has long been felt that the production rate of one egg per goose per day is an example of the decline in productivity. Three geese will be let go, and an upgrading in the selection procedure by personnel will assure management that from now on every goose it gets will be a good one.

The seven swans a-swimming is obviously a number chosen in better times. Their function is primarily decorative. Mechanical swans are in order. The current swans will be retrained to learn some new strokes and, therefore, enhance their outplacement.

As is known, the eight maids-a-milking concept has been under heavy scrutiny by the EEOC. A male/female balance in the workforce is being sought. The more militant maids consider this a dead-end job with no upward mobility. Automation of the process may permit the maids to try a-mending, a-mentoring, or a-mulching.

Nine ladies dancing has always been an odd number. This function will be phased out as these individuals grow older and can no longer do the steps.

Ten lords-a-leaping is overkill. The high cost of lords plus the expense of international air travel prompted the compensation committee to suggest replacing this group with ten out-of-work congressmen. While leaping ability may be somewhat sacrificed, the savings are significant because there is an oversupply of unemployed congressmen this year.

Eleven pipers piping and twelve drummers drumming is a simple case of the band getting too big. A substitution with a string quartet, a cutback on new music, and no uniforms, will produce savings which will drop right down to the bottom line.

We can expect a substantial reduction in the number of assorted people, fowl, animals, and other expenses. Though incomplete, studies indicate that stretching deliveries over twelve days is inefficient. If we can drop-ship in a single day, service levels will be improved.

Action is pending regarding the lawsuit filed by the Attorney's Association seeking expansion to include the legal profession (thirteen lawyers a-suing).

Lastly, it is not beyond consideration that deeper cuts may be necessary in the future to stay competitive. Should that happen, the Board will request management to scrutinize the Snow White Division to see if seven dwarfs is the right number.

(The "Report from the North Pole" was forwarded to me some time ago and was actually written by Professor Victoria L. Sork of the Department of Biology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.)

Forget the FBI: The MPAA is spying on you

Hollywood is losing money, so they are going after college students who use peer to peer downloads...

And the Democrats are helping them do it, by putting it into a bill that mandates colleges to spy on students.
Bush spies on suspicious emails to prevent terrorism, and it's the front page. Harry Reid sponsors a bill mandating spying on college students, no problem.

The problem is not only that they will spy, but the WAPo computer geek notes that the program being offered "voluntarily" to colleges essentially allows hackers to break into the entire university network, since few of these networks have sophisticated firewall security to counteract the "feedback" part of the Hollywood program.

The above link at cooking for engineers has a photo instruction on how to cook a turkey.

The most interesting clue is that they advise to start cooking it upside down, and then rotate with every basting, so the drumsticks get adequately cooked while protecting the breasts from drying out.

The Athiest and the bear

An atheist was walking through the woods.
"What majestic trees"!
"What powerful rivers"!
"What beautiful animals"!
He said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him.
He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.
He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing in on him.

He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear was even closer. He tripped & fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his right paw to strike him.

At that instant the Atheist cried out, "Oh my God!"

Time Stopped.
The bear froze.
The forest was silent.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. "You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident." "Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer"?
The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian"?

"Very Well," said the voice.

The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke:
"Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen."

Even the NYTimes has finally noticed the improvements in Baghdad...
And this AFP article says the same thing...locals rightly attribute it to the increased ability of the Iraqi government to stop the bad guys...which of course is true...but it helps both sides to know that the American's aren't pulling out....it's sorta like keeping the US in South Korea for 50 years...just to remind the bad guys that if they try something the big 400 lb gorilla is still around...

Carolyn Glick of the Jerusalem Post has an article reprinted HERE...most of it is about stopping Iran from nuking her, but the important paragraph is about the WMD from Iraq, and whether or not that hushed up airstrike in Syria by Israel was to destroy them:

the head of the non-governmental International Intelligence Summit, John Loftus, released a report on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program... "The gist of the new evidence is this: Roughly one-quarter of Saddam's WMD was destroyed under UN pressure during the early to mid 1990s. Saddam sold approximately another quarter of his weapons stockpile to his Arab neighbors during the mid-to-late-1990's. The Russians insisted on removing another quarter in the last few months before the war. The last remaining WMD, the contents of Saddam's nuclear weapons labs, were still inside Iraq on the day when the coalition forces arrived in 2003. His nuclear weapons equipment was hidden in enormous underwater warehouses beneath the Euphrates River. Saddam's entire nuclear inventory was later stolen from these warehouses right out from under the Americans' noses."

Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside with
only a pet dog for company. One day the dog died,
and Muldoon went to the parish priest and asked,
'Father, me dog is dead. Could ya' be saying' a mass for the poor creature?'

Father Patrick replied, 'I'm afraid not; we cannot
have services for an animal in the church. But there
are some Baptists down the lane, and there's no tellin'
what they believe. Maybe they'll do something for the creature.'
Muldoon said, 'I'll go right away Father. Do
ya' think $5,000 is enough to donate to them for the service?'

Father Patrick exclaimed, 'Oh, that's different.
Why didn`t ya tell me the dog was Catholic?'

CBS News: Combat veterans suicide expose misuses statistics

CBS has an "expose" on veterans suicide....the headline blares: Suicide epidemic among veterans...suicide rate of veterans is twice that of other Americans...

The problem is that it simply is not true.

Suicide is a terrible problem, and suicides are higher in those suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome and combat fatigue...but what disturbs me is that the analysis is poorly done.
My full analysis is on BNN where you can find all the nice references, but in summary

1) they compare veteran (mainly males) suicide data (suicide rate 18-20 per 100 000 population) to the general population (suicide rate of 11)...but a better comparison would be to the suicide rate of males ( 17)
By using the general population, the low suicide rate in females (4.6) distorts the picture.

2) by not defining who is a veteran in their data, the data might include those who never were in combat, or the elderly, whose suicide rate is much higher.
If the statistics on veterans come from the VA, we might see a different problem: the VA has an extensive mental health program, using VA statistics might artificially increase the statistics, since their population would be sicker medically and psychiatrically than those veterans who never used and never needed the VA system and were lost to follow up.

3) the only combat veteran group from Iraq whose statistics they cite is veterans from 45 states from age 20 to 25, where they cite a high rate of 22-31.

The problem is that many who serve in Iraq are older than this...the average age of National Guard members in Iraq is actually 33...so why do they highlight this age group? And are the numbers high enough to be statistically valid?

We don't know, because they never bother to give us the statistical analysis.
And they don't bother to inform you of the military's suicide prevention program, nor that Bush just signed a bill to increase VA funding for suicide prevention...

This is good news, since suicide is an ongoing problem in combat veterans, and it's just too early to tell how bad the problem will be. So yes, inform the public, but stop distorting statistics to "prove" veterans are all helpless victims. The suicide statistics do not prove that they are much worse off than their stay at home brethren.

And FYI: The suicide rate in doctors is between 28 an 40....higher than that cited by CBS for the younger, most vulnerable combat veterans.

Madeline's poster

This is the poster from madeline a couple years ago..
Madeline Lathroum, 10, took first place for Navy entrants.

"I just thought of it, drawing a carrier when my dad was (deployed to) Hawaii," Madeline said about her entry. "I was surprised. I didn't think I'd win."

Her dad, Navy Cmdr. John Lathroum, was pleased his daughter received the award.

"I just think it's really nice that something like this gives her a bit of positive feedback on something she really loves to do," Lathroum said.

Oy veh, am I having a bad hair day!

Hollywood notes

Hollywood's anti American propaganda films are tanking at the box office, but the IHT has the back story of Hollywood corruption behind the writer's strike...

Essentially, the stars and producers/directors get money no matter what (often with profits from different hit movies), and the rest of those working for the industry get a pittance even if the story is a hit....

Reminds me of Joseph Wambaugh who said he preferred working as a cop with ordinary thieves than with the Hollywood types.

Happy Veteran's day

And some are grateful for their work:

(Host) Sheik Ahmed Abu Risha spoke through a translator. He said his province has overcome terrorists and insurgents.

(Abu Risha) (voices shift back and forth from Arabic to English) ``Today in this state ... we present this victory ... to the families of the victims of the soldiers in Iraq ... and specifically express our appreciation to the state of Vermont.'' ...
(Host) James Soriano is a State Department official traveling with the Iraqi delegation. He says the sheik keeps a memento of the Vermonters' service.

(Soriano) ``And I said to him, `And you know we're going to go to the state of Vermont.' ... And, he said, `Vermont?' He said `There was a Vermont military unit which was stationed here in the Ramadi area.' He rose from his chair and went over to the shelf and pulled off the shelf a plaque, signed by the colonel and the sergeant-major, in the shape of the state of Vermont. He still had it on display."

Reading asignment for today

Austin Bay has a story about meeting a LtCol in an airport, and about those who understand...

And I agree, not because Lolo is a veteran, or even because John is back in the Gulf...but because those who bomb markets and kill civilians in Mindanao, Afghanistan, or Baghdad need to be destroyed....

And the dirty little secret that I learned as a missionary in Africa is that they kill civilians because they can...why risk your life killing a soldier when you can kill a nun or a teacher or school kids who can't shoot back, and feel like a hero?

And the irony is that the same "peace and liberation" types that funded the "freedom fighters" who killed Sister Rita and 37 other of my fellow missionaries now ignore the human rights atrocities of the regieme they essentially put into place, while going on and feeling "self righteous" about their Bush hatred.

Heh. NYT might actually get it

At a Catholic summer camp, Kelly was struck by the reverence of the Latin Mass.

“It’s quiet,” she said. “People are paying attention. In the English Mass, it’s noisy. There are babies crying. But here people are completely focused on God.”

My take exactly...it's not Latin per se but the "whoppie for us" versions of the modern mass that drive Catholics into other churches.

Quote of the day

Philosophy has several branches, but on one tree. The good, the true, and the beautiful can be distinguished, and to some degree isolated in the foreground. Yet in the background they coalesce. We speak of the beauty of a moral act, and everyone knows what that means, including those who deny that they know. We speak of “truth to nature” in a drawing, and say that a song is “good.” Each virtue points towards a convergence, where “the fire and the rose are one.”

The question of how to live can never be reduced to law and politics. There is also, to be urgently considered, the question of beauty. Our “machine for living” cannot be very efficient, if it is ugly, and especially if it excludes the possibility of moral, ethical, and aesthetic beauty.

Fishing can be dangerous

MANILA (Reuters) - A powerful explosion ripped through a residential village south of the Philippine capital Manila on Thursday, killing four people and wounding two, police said.

Fidel Posadas, police chief in Cavite province, said a large cache of dynamite stored in one of the houses in Bacoor town likely caused the blast but investigators were still trying to find out what set it off.

Illegal dynamite fishing still occurs in the Philippines and along the Cavite coastline.

Dynamite fishing is illegal, of course...but with the large coastline it still is used.
Not only does it destroy the coral reef, but as this explosion shows, it is dangerous...
