Lest We Forget
It was on this day in 2002 that city workers held a wordless ceremony marking the end of the recovery and cleanup at Ground Zero in New York City.
The cleanup crew had consisted of more than 7000 firefighters, policemen, construction workers, and volunteers. The site covered 17 acres and rose 150 feet above the street. Some of the steel columns pulled from the piles glowed red. The workers eventually removed 1 1/2 million tons of debris in more than 100,000 truckloads.
The ceremony on this day in 2002 took place at 10:29 a.m., the precise time at which the second of the twin towers collapsed. A New York City firefighter struck a bell 20 times, the traditional ceremony for a fallen firefighter. The New York City Fire Department had lost 343 firefighters on September 11th.
A group of firefighters and police officers played bagpipes and drums as a flatbed truck carried away the last steel beam to be removed from the site. Many of the workers had written their names on the beam. ...

Japanese police spokesman comments:
"We really don't know how this happened at this stage. But what we can assume now is that more than one person was involved in this incident."
Danger danger danger!--or maybe not
We docs went thru this in 1970 with Orinase. But how much is politics? according to one doc at Medscape,
“The NEJM was irresponsible to go to [Drs Bruce] Psaty and [Curt] Furberg for the editorial--they were always going to emphasize concerns about drug safety; that’s what they do," he commented. “But I’m not surprised this paper was published like this. The three major medical journals are becoming more like British tabloid newspapers--all they lack is a bare-chested woman on page 3," he jibed.
My take is HERE. Translation: tiny risk, major disease, and what the hell a lot of the time it's the only medicine that works. And anyway, it's probably better to maybe increase your risk of heart attack by half a percent than to feel lousy all the time and end up losing your foot from high blood sugar.

Michael Yon's site has a summary about Anbar provence.
Although there is sharp fighting in Diyala Province, and Baghdad remains a battleground, and the enemy is trying to undermine security in areas they’d lost interest in, the fact is that the security plan, or so-called “surge,” is showing clear signs of progress. The city of Hit, for instance. Only about a hundred days ago, Hit was a city at war. Today, the buildings are still riddled with bullet holes, but the Iraqi people are opening shops and painting over the scars. They are waving and smiling while hundreds of men are volunteering to join the police. I saw a “policeman” on duty today whose “weapon” was a plastic pistol. I photographed the toy. And so this man was on “duty” with a toy pistol, though he has not yet attended the police academy and is not even being paid. A writer could probably squeeze bad news from that story, but I won’t try. In fact, Hit is a place where writers who wish to escape combat and bad news should visit.
Again, another day passes, and I have no bad news to deliver other than what amounted to a trivial attack with a very small bomb.

John Edwards thinks there is no war on terror, which is news to those of us in the Philippines, where Alqaeda has been active since the mid 1990's. Guess he doesn't think Alqaeda related terror in India, Indonesia, Bengaladesh, Thailand or the Philippines is "real" terror, since he can't blame it on Bush.
The Anchoress points out that troops complain that good news is ignored, or buried under headlines of bombs, making it appear that there is no good news from Iraq. Tet redux?
But Time Magazine notices the positive changes in Anbar, which was written off by the press a couple months ago...
Trying to see everything thru a politically correct template can lead to some real absurdities. Take this "Historian" who has a long essay essentially saying the government is manipulating the recovery of captured soldiers as propaganda. He is an "expert" because he wrote a book about recovering bodies from VietNam using "the theoretical insights of Judith Butler, Michel Foucault, and Emmanuel Levinas..".
Um, perhaps instead he should have used the theoretical insights of Sophocles on why many people feel need to rescue and bury friends and relatives, even at the risk of one's life.

This morning at 4 am I work due to a dog crying, and then all the dogs started to whine. At first, I thought it was a puppy fell into a hole, but instead found that the motherdog had dug a cave in the soft ground to have her puppies, and a rock tumbled in pinning her at the neck.
This would be the third litter since we had her "fixed". Guess it didn't work.
----Update: Six puppies. One white, two black and four brown. She finally found a "hole" beneath the cubbyhole shelf with our "mama Mary" shrine.

Coburn: making waves as usual
Senator Coburn isn't just stepping on people's toes by stopping pork projects, he is now making trouble by pointing out that Rachel Carson might be a saint to the Environmental movement, but her book, which inspired the world to ban DDT to save the birds, has resulted in half a million dead kids every year due to the resurgence of malaria by banning this cheap, essentially non toxic insecticide.
I wrote an essay pointing out the same thing here...

The Bad news: A quarter of their kids think it's okay to bomb innocent civilians "to defend Islam".
The good news:satire site Iowahawk reports Midwest Lutherans mostly reject violence.
Kohut pointed to one of the study's key findings that only 29% of all respondents agreed that "bloody, random violence against infidels" was "always" or "frequently" justified, versus 56% who said such violence was "seldom" or "never" justified. The approval of violence rose slightly among younger Lutherans and when the hypothetical violence was targeted against Presbyterians, but still fell well short of a majority...More than 95% supported "pancake breakfasts" "popcorn fundraisers," but support dropped to less than 80% for "cow tipping" and "T-P'ing infidel houses." Support dropped even more dramatically for more violent means of conquest, such as "suicide bombing" (28%), "decapitation" (24%), and "running over Presbyterians with my Ski-Doo" (23%).

"...Carson's book "Silent Spring," published in 1962, led to the banning of the pesticide DDT, the launch of modern environmentalism and her enshrinement as a kind of patron saint of nature...."
Ah, but did Rachel Carson care more about birds than children?
Buried in paragraph 27, and paraphrasing the Congressman, The Washington Post concedes that "numerous" deaths might have been prevented by DDT...Just how "numerous" is numerous? Wouldn't you ask that question? The Post never asks that question. Why? Because the answer devastates Rachel Carson and her followers. According to these CDC figures, malaria kills more than 800,000 children under age five every year.

Also from Instapundit: Attention Rosie.
“[A] seismology report prepared at Columbia University provides a glimpse into how that damage [to the southwest corner of WTC7] was caused. The report notes that the collapses of the Twin Towers caused little ground instability, but nevertheless discharged a massive amount of energy—as much as 107 joules in the kinetic energy of dust and debris. Except for temperature, the effect was similar to the energy contained in the pyroclastic ash given off in volcanic eruptions. ‘Only a very small portion of the [gravitational energy associated with the collapse of each tower] was converted into seismic waves,’ the report states. ‘Most of the energy went into deformation of buildings and the formation of rubble and dust.’”
The report continues: “Most of the effects of those collapses on adjacent structures and people were related to the kinetic energy of falling debris and the pressure on buildings exerted by dust- and particle-laden air mobilized by falling debris.” From 300 hundred yards away—the distance from the North Tower to WTC7—that debris cloud devastated the base of World Trade Center 7. —Davin Coburn

Pajamasmedia has a long essay by a Russian showing how US reporters misreported what was going on in Russia because they interpreted the story into a "left wing good right wing bad" template, ignoring that the nationalist anti semetic anti Western right wing had a lot more in common with the nationaistic anti semetic and western left wing, and that together they ended up destroying Russia's fragile democracy.
He then goes on to show how a similar template is destroying the will of the US in Iraq, and allowing a moral equivalence of some very very evil men in the name of objectivity.
My essay points out a similar template in Colombia (where I have relatives) and in the Philippines similarly demonizes the good in the right, ignores the bad in the left, and ignores the huge growing middle class who would suffer the most with the win of the left wing and islamicist extremists in all these countries.

The mathematical life of plants
And many other creepers do the same.
But some climb anti-clockwise; the Bindweed does, for one,
Or Convolvulus, to give her proper name.
Rooted on either side a door one of each species grew
And raced towards the window-ledge above;
Each corkscrewed to the lintel in the only way it knew,
Where they stopped, touched tendrils, smiled, and fell in love.
Said the right-handed Honeysuckle
To the left-handed Bindweed:
'Oh, let us get married
If our parents don't mind; we'd
Be loving and inseparable,
Inextricably entwined;
we'd Live happily ever after,'
Said the Honeysuckle to the Bindweed.
To the Honeysuckle's parents it came as a shock.
'The Bindweeds', they cried, 'are inferior stock,
They're uncultivated, of breeding bereft;
We twine to the right-and they twine to the left!'
Said the anti-clockwise Bindweed
To the clockwise Honeysuckle:
'We'd better start saving,
Many a mickle maks a muckle,
Then run away for a honeymoon
And hope that our luck'll
Take a turn for the better,'
Said the Bindweed to the Honeysuckle.
A Bee who was passing remarked to them then:
Tve said it before, and I'll say it again;
Consider your off-shoots, if off-shoots there be,
They'll never receive any blessing from me!
'Poor little sucker, how will it learn
When it is climbing, which way to turn?
Right-left-what a disgrace!
Or it may go straight up and fall flat on its face!'
Said the right-hand thread Honeysuckle
To the left-hand thread Bindweed:
'It seems that against us
All fate has combined ...
Oh my darling, oh my darling
Oh my darling Columbine,
Thou art lost and gone for ever,
We shall never intertwine.'
Together they found them the very next day.
They had pulled up their roots and just shrivelled away,
Deprived of that freedom for which we must fight-
To veer to the left or to veer to the right!

Electricity rationed in Zimbabwe
The measure, meaning electricity will only be available in homes between 1700 and 2100 local time, is likely to come into force immediately.
The move is designed to support the country's wheat farmers who need power to irrigate their crops.
Rampant inflation has led to widespread shortages of fuel and food.
The monthly rate of inflation rose to 2,200% in March, the highest in the world. ...
Actually, limiting electricity to several hours a day is a common thing in the third world. We here in the Philippines have rolling blackouts, and sometimes announce that businesses will shut early due to the heat and large need for electricity. But here the problem is airconditioning, and is mainly now, at the end of the dry season, when it is very hot and our hydroelectric power is low.
In Zim, if I remember correctly, they have Kyle and Kariba for hydroelectric power...but it is the end of the rainy season so is the "rationing" partly due to low water levels?

The really important headlines of the day
DaveBarry comments: "...the Minneapolis-St.Paul Star-Tribune, has decided to kill his column and have him write straight local news stories. This is like the Miami Heat deciding to relieve Dwyane Wade of his basketball-playing obligations so he can keep stats."
If you don't know Lileks, you should. Perhaps I should rephrase that. If you are sane, you probably don't know about Lileks. But if you are a normal human being, Lilek's combination of nostalgia and topical is just the thing to brighten your day. Here's his website with links to his daily bleat, his matchbook collection, his photograph collection, and various other oddities that defy description...and all G rated to boot.
Now that I no longer live in Minnesota, I tend to read his bleat more than his newspaper column: Here's an example where Lileks discusses Wally Schirra, Rudy, 24, and Lurch's panoramas... in the same article...
His Daily Quirk in the StarTrib has a similar museful quality. Here's excerpts from his discussion of summer classes for children..and why parents love them:
The brochures might as well be frank:
"Fun With Art 101." Using crayons and paint, children will draw rainbows over and over again while you spend the morning running errands with just the little one instead of all three in the back seat, hitting each other with lightsabers and WILL YOU STOP IT? THANK YOU.
"Theater: Designing costumes." Three teenagers from the high-school drama class, using the techniques of European theatrical traditions, take the kids off your hands for three consecutive afternoons.
"Harry Potter and the Whatever of Whatever." Our trained staff will distract your children for half a day with words like "Muggle" and "Voldemort" so you can weed the garden.
Now, if I could write like that, I'd retire to a tropical island and become a lady of leisure...whoops been there done that. But you get the idea. It's not a dour intellectual discussion worthy of a GREAT NEWSPAPER...and to make it worse, about 0.1% of his writings betray a....conservative bias. Tch tch. Can't have that.
There must be an explanation of the StarTrib's decision, and I found it HERE: Altogether now: It's the senility stupid...and the cure? Well, these scientists say physical and mental exercize is one way to prevent senility. So send them a copy of Mommy Knows Worst, and then go to this link and try not to smile.
And if you are at work and someone says you're wasting time, tell them you are taking your daily antisenility lesson.
