Sad news of the day

Lava cascades down the slopes of Mayon volcano in Albay province at dawn on Tuesday. (Nelson Salting/Associated Press)

Mayon volcano was predicted to sputter along for a couple of months, but now two growing lava domes make scientists worry that it will have a "big bang" explosion...and more families are in danger if it rains and causes mudslides...
30thousand evacuated so far, twice that many will be evacuated if things get bad.
There goes the tomato harvest...but 70 farmers were killed in the last eruption trying to work on fields, so the gov't is being cautious.

----------------------

Bah Humbug...government here says no street caroling by kids and no "Merry Christmas" at the airport, because people might think you're asking for a tip.

Their excuse is that people "exploit" street children to beg, but actually a lot of mountain farmers have a yearly Christmas trip to Manila to increase their income by begging, and they are blocking traffic. Their romantic looking lifestyle at home is in reality a hard life of poverty, because farming and fishing traditionally won't sustain the increasing population or compete with globalization LINK

Recipes Recipes

The Stephanie Plum/Evanovich fansite has recipes for junk food for people from Jersey.
from the webpage:
Pineapple Upside Down Cake
3 eggs
1 cup of flour
1 cup of sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
4 tablespoons unsweetened pineapple juice
5 tablespoons butter
1 cup brown sugar
Unsweetened pineapple slices
Melt the butter in a nine inch pie plate. Dump brown sugar into the plate and mash with a fork until it's all mixed with the melted butter and covers the bottom of the plate. Arrange pineapple slices on bottom of plate in single layer. Mix eggs, flour, sugar, baking powder and pineapple juice by hand in a small bowl until smooth. Pour mixture over pineapple slices. Bake in a 350 degree oven until a pick comes out clean (maybe 30-45 min.) Remove cake from oven and set on rack for a couple minutes. Put cake plate over the hot cake in the pie plate and CAREFULLY but quickly turn the pie plate upside down. Remove pie plate and let cake cool to room temperature. Pineapple slices should be on top! (If you let the cake cool in the pie plate you'll NEVER get it out). When cool spread lots of globs of whipped cream on it ...the real stuff, none of that fake stuff in a can! Eat too much.

I used to make it for my kids all the time, but I used a box of yellow cake mix to make the cake part.

Santa Lucia

RectaRatioBlog notes that Sunday celebrated the feast of St. Lucy, the patroness of the blind. In Catholic churches, the saints and statues all have a "hint" to tell you who they are. Well, since St Lucy had her eyes put out before she was martyred, she usually carries a tray with eyeballs on it so you know it's her, not St. Agnes (who usually carries a lamb).

The legend is that prior to being martyred she wore candles on her head so she could carry more supplies when she traveled through the dungeons to bring bread to those imprisoned for their faith. So the Swedish custom is for a girl to do the same. Often there are processions of girls, one with the crown, and others with a single candle..

On St. Lucy's Day each year by tradition one of the daughters of the family is chosen to be St. Lucy. She gets up early and takes coffee and 'Lucia' buns (Saffronsbrod) to the rest of the family who are still in bed. She dresses in a white robe with a scarlet sash and wears on her head a crown of green leaves with five candles in it.

The traditional bun is a Lussekat, (St. Lucy's Cat) or Saffron bun.
Rectaratio has the recipe HERE.

Gift Item of the day

SteriPen, a new portable water purifier that uses ultraviolet instead of chemicals to kill germs...
StrategyPage says soldiers can now officially use it...

I like their headlines:
Light The Little Suckers Up And Watch Them Die
The SteriPen uses ultraviolet light to kill all microbes in water. The battery powered device weighs 4.5 ounces (189g) and is 7.3 inches (18.6cm) long. It takes 48 seconds to clean half a liter (16 ounces) of water (and 90 seconds for a liter). Just stick the probe in the water, press the button and watch the countdown timer.

Sounds a bit faster than the old fashioned ceramic.terracotta jug sterilizer we used to use before Lolo dug his deep well.

"...The idea occurred to Weegens as he realized that rats were both easy to train and had an excellent sense of smell...
He founded APOPO, which is a non-profit organization, the aim of which is to train up African Giant Pouched Rats and to deploy them in the field. Not only would the rats be a cheaper alternative to mine clearance methods already in use – he figured that they would be considerably more efficient as well. ...The rats move up and down an area the size of a squash court and when they locate a mine they usually sit still and scratch themselves. After that the mines can be detonated by their human helpers.

How to do CPR

To do proper CPR, you have to do it fast enough to keep the blood pressure up but slow enough for the heart to refill with blood between beats.

So how to learn the proper rate without a metronome? sing a song to get it right. And scientists say it works:

Their findings, published online in the British Medical Journal, confirmed Nellie – already used by some trainers – was the more effective song...

the problem? The song might distract those doing CPR, so the scientists
..called for research into other songs that might work, including Another One Bites the Dust by Queen or Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus.

A previous study by the University of Illionois medical school found the Bee Gees disco anthem Stayin' Alive was, at 103 beats per minute, close to the ideal rhythm.

Playstation into Supercomputer

From StrategyPage:

The Cell Processor on the PlayStation 3 (PS 3) is also a GPU, and that GPU alone was used to built several of the fastest supercomputers on the planet. But military researchers were quick to note that some versions of the PS 3 could be tweaked to run Linux, and the software required to produce supercomputer results from the PS 3s Cell processor. Since the PS 3 is sold below cost (so buyers will purchase lots of very profitable games), the U.S. military has bought thousands of PS 3s and used them as inexpensive supercomputers.

Stranger and stranger

As Maguindanao is under martial law, things are getting stranger and stranger.

More and more weapons are being found that weren't issued to local militias:
On Tuesday night, missiles and ammunition with sufficient power to obliterate a small town were found by soldiers in a huge warehouse allegedly owned by Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr.

The missiles, including “illuminating rockets,” were stashed between two concrete walls of a storage area just a few meters from the province’s main public market in Barangay San Sebastian.

and although human rights lawyers are opposed to martial law in the area, the safety is allowing witnesses to other murders to come forth: estimate 200 people killed, mostly peasants...
“Everybody was aware (of the killings), but they have been tolerated,” De Lima added. “That is why we want full accountability now. The years of tolerance and neglect are over.”

De Lima said independent forensic experts deputized by her agency would begin excavating two alleged “killing fields” in the next two weeks.

The president has declared martial law in the province where the massacre occurred, and arrested the governor.

But legally, she can't impose martial law unless it is a rebellion, and so even (ex president) Ramos has objected, saying it is an "over-reaction...(the Congress will have to okay it if it is to continue)...there is a lot of debate on this on the TV and radio, in Tagalog and English, parsing the law and it's implications.

ABS CBN has two reports: the justification seems to be the huge stores of arms found in a warehouse meant a rebellion was planned. Others are skeptical...

Ironically, the MILF is staying out of it (it doesn't affect their area).

The (pro administration) Manila Bulletin's headline today is "The World is Watching"...

Keep the Philippines in your prayers: the administration is on a tight rope between overreaction and not reacting enough...and if there is no justice, clan wars could erupt and kill many innocent people.

Maguindanao Massacre update

When the government ordered all the guns of the private militias turned in, they got a bunch of old weapons.

But now they found a huge cache of guns and larger weapons near the Ampatuan mansions in Shariff Aguak, which were buried there two days after the massacre. The weapons were not issued to the local militias They came from an arsenal in Bataan...
The Inquirer notes:"

The discovery of the arms cache—which officials said represented enough firepower for an entire Army battalion—has prompted the military to launch an extensive investigation into possible gunrunning among its ranks.

“We were surprised at the find and more surprised to (dig up) government arsenal ammunition,” Brawner told the Inquirer."

This could be big: A year or two ago, when a marine patrol was ambushed, their mortars and other weapons failed, and there was speculation back then that the newer ammo had been sold off, and out of date weapons substituted.

So you not only have the gov't arming local militias, and governors using local militias as their private armies, but you have them armed with weapons stolen/diverted from Armscor. Theoretically, if these were sent there legally, there should be a paper trail. If they were stolen/diverted, there won't be a paper trail.

The only good news: Two more Ampatuans arrested, Maguindanao Governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. (father of the arrested mayor) and:

Security forces are now also holding Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) governor Zaldy Ampatuan in connection with the massacre

(he is the murder suspect's brother).

It's not just Mindanao, you know:

THIS Case shows how it works: kill five people when you are aiming at two of them, and you only get charged for two murders. So now you let your wife run for mayor in your place...

This afternoon, they brought in a dog from the farm that had been machete'd by a thief last Saturday...I had sent up antibiotics but this was the first time we had the truck to pick up the dog. So we took the dog to the vet...a nasty wound, infected but I've seen worse (the dog wasn't septic).

The dog despite all of this licked our hands and wagged his tale, even though we were strangers. Wonder whose genes he picked up, since his father is George the killer Lab and his mother is named "Bruna" because she is so vicious.

We'll probably pick him up tomorrow and keep him here until the wound heals.

All the puppies from Blackie were given away last week:and our granddaughter's small white dog's last puppie is so cute we hate to give him away. His is called RuffRuff, and is a little fluff ball. I'll try to get photos before he leaves for his new family.

The Silk Road

I keep pointing out that Obama is ignoring China and India's interest in Afghanistan.

The reason is the silk road.

GMA's long term plan is to run for Congress, become house speaker, and then go on to lead the country after Charter change (aka ChaCha) goes into effect.
If she is perceived as slowing the investigation of the killers, who are linked with her politically, it will count against her.

It's the dangerous time of the year

AMedNews states:

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an average of 6,000 people a year end up in the emergency department for packaging-related injuries. Many more get minor wounds from using sharp implements to extricate products.

Most of the problem is in that hard plastic "Clamshell packaging".

and Epilog notes that some foods are dangerous:
1,979 people appeared in ERs with a BRI (bagel related injury). Chicken-related injuries (3,463) led the category, but recorded bagel injuries were otherwise exceeded only by potato, apple and onion injuries."

Stuff below the fold

NYTimes prints it's biannual article noting that the US Indian Health Service sucks.

Been there, done that. For the last 40 years,(I first worked with the IHS in 1974) the IHS has had dedicated medical personnel trying to give decent care despite inadequate out of date facilities, long hours, limited budget, and multicultural barriers.

Computers may drive up health care costs, says Harvard Study.
"...the healthcare system is broken — it’s overloaded, overburdened, over-administered, over-litigated, and way more costly than it should be. When it comes to adding IT, there’s an old maxim that comes into play: “When you automate a mess, you get an automated mess.” As with automation in any industry, organizations need to first clear up and address underlying processes and issues before throwing software and systems at them..."

Climate change explained

What is the scientific way to look at climiate change, asks DevilsKitchenBlog, and gives us this illustration:

Ah, but how is it being sold to us in the media?

------------------------
And the UN now says it means we have to limit population to stop climate change:

Yes, the very people who gave out condoms in the overcrowded shelters of Manila, where food, water and basic medicines were lacking, are insisting that you shouldn't breed.

"Every unintended birth prevented in the US will permit the rest of the world to breathe a little easier," said Potts.

Oh, you mean like the unplanned pregnancy of teenaged Ann Dunham?
